Buy Backs

Does anyone know if BTE has applied to buy back any more shares yet?  They must be approaching the initial 10% soon.

December presentation says 4.1% repurchased.
Comment by Drifter133 on Dec 20, 2022 8:54am
They are authorized to buyback 10% or 56MM and I believe that they are around 20-25mm right now so won't get to the 10% this year Given the strength of our balance sheet and consistent with our desire to offer direct shareholder returns, the Board of Directors has approved the filing of a Normal Course Issuer Bid ("NCIB") application with the TSX for a share buyback program of up to ...more

They have until May 8th  2023 to buyback their 10%. this is in the new  May 2th 2022.

Sorry I mean in the NEWS ( not new ) May 2th 2022.

This is the issue with buybacks.   Rarely does a company reach 10%.   Give me dividends in my TFSA over buybacks every time.   Or just payoff debt. My opinion only.
Comment by Drifter133 on Dec 20, 2022 9:35am
I totally agree with the company's plan given their debt load! Over anything else, the debt needs to get within reasonable limits! Currently most FCF going to debt and the remainder to buybacks until dept limits met, so great plan!!  I don't want a dividend right now but if there were one than it'd have to be very very meaningful Div. and not some .01,.005 etc... per share cra!

This is the issue with the dividend, they must give a decent dividend, otherwise  this is better to put your money to the Bank and get 5% interest a year without the high risk like oil sector as we see actualy.
Comment by CoachAmI on Dec 20, 2022 9:50am
I do agree with you on this.  I've also seen many companies offer a special dividend for "longs".  This would be nice and would encourage more people to hold onto shares instead of shorting.
Comment by TheWokeLemming on Dec 20, 2022 10:00am
IMHO, buybacks are a way for companies to say they are doing something to increase share price, without buying/doing much at all.
Comment by dllscwbysfn on Dec 20, 2022 10:17am
So if they start a dividend instead of doing share buybacks then you have to pay the dividend to those shares that did not get bought back, so i am ok with the plan. I do wish though that they and all oil companies would cut capex and not grow production as the stock price is not being rewarded for this as well as debt reduction and share buybacks.

Dividend is a waste. I have my other dividend oil companies If you want one there are plenty. I just got a raise on WCP ans Surge this week in fact If you dont like the buyback play move to others or quit complaining  Lot of options Me i want to see how this plays out with only debt and buybacks
Comment by doggiestyle on Dec 20, 2022 10:47am
Good discussion. Either can work depending on your needs for income versus capital gains and the nice thing now is that you can pick your oil investments based on your own profile.  Can likely all agree that the one thing we don't want to see from any of these guys is big cap Ex increases. The market will punish THAT very quickly.

What can I say? I keep it loose cause no one can time it... but price targets... much easier. My track record is pretty solid... you have no credibility here. You are no one who came from nowhere. You're just another BSW who will disapear but at least BSW provided  a degree of value.

RRSP and TFSA investors weight the dividend payers higher and the non registered accounts tend to prefer capital gains (espaceilay with many having copaital loses to offset with this year)  I have a theory that the non-registered trading accounts are much more active in daily trading which is why the Non Divvy payers like BTE and HWX have been more volatile lately. Should work in reverse ...more

I am holding CPG and BIR too, BIR  has offered a special dividend in november 2022   and  they will raise   their regular dividend  in 2023  to .80  yield ( year ) and the share price does not move  up . I am just tired to see those companies with buyback, debt reduced and dividend = share price does not react as he should. So there is a serious ...more
