Radical(tree huggers) bunch down there, back in the day Pulp Mill, Ferries, Tourism, Coal, and Logging were the main jobs. Now everyone works out of town, self employed, on the dole, or retired....And the Real Estate market is going crazy...

I live in Nanaimo regrettably, after retiring from Calgary.... my best advice, is Don't make the mistake that I have made.   It's like going back to the 30's...welfare, some tourism and old minded retirees..there is nothing of prosperity build in the thinking of the Loco Locals!
