good to great

one of the takeaways from this book was the companies that are successful over a long period of time are led by less than flamboyant people who let those under him share the spotlight. MT strikes me as one of these leaders who let his VPs lead the call and stepping in when needed (question on new drug release). Sure, they stumbled at times but this is part of getting new faces up front. May not be good in the short term but good in the long term. I just hope we don't have to wait for 50 years to find out. LOL

Sunshine,  I wish to speak to your comment that MT strikes you as a less than flamboyant type of person who lets his other leaders share the spotlight.  My first research point speaks to his flamboyancy / swagger: On February 19, 2015 Concordia entered into a lease agreement for a jet at $1.02 million plus operating costs of $0.62M annually.  (Source:  Page 13 of the 2015 ...more

Health123:  I respect your point about the jet but must point out that an international business like Cxr might actually be saving money by spending 4500 a day on the jet. That is only 2 first class tickets from Toronto to London.  I think it's a justified cost for a two billion plus market cap company.

If a company has a jet sell the stock lol holy I have now heard everything. They would be making trips all over the place for meetings and of coarse it's cheaper for them to have it and convenient. They could have meetings while they are flying from one place to another pretty hard to do that on a commercial jet

Hi fep2009.  Actually, the advice to sell the stock on that day would have been good advice in hindsight.  On February 19 2015, the date when the company entered into the agreement for the jet, Concordia's stock price closed at $61.92.  I would be happy to sell you my stock for that price today, plus I will buy you as much as you want.  Deal?    quote=fep2009]If ...more

Health321.... You failed to mention that the stock went up to $117 after the jet contract was signed... The recent drop to $35 had nothing to do with the jet contract
Comment by Health123 on Mar 27, 2016 2:29pm
PJ,  I never said the price decrease had anything to do with the jet contract.  In fact if you read my posts I have suggested a few other things that may explain the recent drop but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.  What I said was that I don't believe that a CEO that has a private jet should be described as someone who isn't flamboyant as one poster described him to be ...more

You have so many aliases to spread your bull*hit that , that's it's hard to keep up who I have put on ignore... By the way you said that they signed a deal for the jet in early 2015 when the stock was at $62 and now it's $35.... My point was that when they deigned the jet deal and the stock was at $62 it then almost doubled before the share price collapsed for other reasons( including ...more

Hi Roller007,  Thank you for your comments and I agree that if MT is using it every day 7 days a week than it may work out to be the same capital cost.  But this is pretty significant considering the jet can only go in one direction at a time so I'm sure there are other execs using first class travel networks that you have discribed in addition to the jet also being used.  And ...more

Hi Agentia77, my comment in reference to Buffet was meant to be a sarcastic one with meaning under the surface  .. but I can see many on this board only took in on a literal level.  Buffet, as many know, for years complained about corporate big wigs using jets and as a result, he was widely criticized when he end up buying one.  Hence, why he named it "The indefensible" ...more

Well to tell you the truth Health123 I have no idea how flamboyant MT is or isn't. I never met him and don't know him personally. Is it extravagant for a company the size of Concordia to be leasing a corporate jet?  Who knows. It's possible that they can justify it based on purely economic grounds and the amount of business travel MT does. The sp sucks for sure but as long as the ...more

Argentia77, Thanks for your point of view. I guess that everyone has their own opinion about the specific capital allocation and that is what discussion is about.  After thinking about the cost (from the financial statement works out  $6,550.00 US per business day)  that seems like a lot to me, especially given the debt issue.  But as you have pointed out, the sp sucks and if ...more
