Mississauga

One of Ontario’s largest cities has opted-out of allowing private retail shops to sell cannabis in Mississauga. Residents must venture outside city bounds or purchase online to secure cannabis supplies. The decision was put to vote at City Council headquarters in central Mississauga today. Council voted 10-2 to opt-out of allowing retail cannabis stores to set up shop, with councillors Karen Ras and Sue McFadden voting against the motion.

I guess it is why all stock are going down a bit.

I don't understand the reasoning for these large cities to opt out orf retail, Markham and Richmond Hill are other cities that have opted out, I would think there would be an aweful lot of unhappy customers in those cities who would either have to go to a retail outlet in another city or online. What mandate do the local poititcans have for them to vote to opt out? The majority of Canadians ...more

hate to say it but i believe this smells of political motives in long run..... Ont premeiere Ford opted to go the private route for cannabis..... which in long run will certainly be much better for the LPs as well as the consumers imo.... but he also gave the municipalities all the options to opt out should they choose too....this in turns reduced the expected revenues from the largest province in ...more

Well Toronto is debating whether they will opt out today.  If they opt out, that would be devestating to the industry. John Tory has indicated he WILL support pot shops, ONLY if the city can dictate their locations.  This isn't the case at the moment as the province has that control.

@ MD :  We have to take in consideration that the conservative goverment of Ford doesn't really want to ''help'' the cannabis industry.  And knowing Ford municipal links I assume that he is doing some sort of lobby to slow down the implantation of cannabis stores in the province.  A law that leave to the municipalities the right to ban cannabis store is in my ...more
