Short sellers perform a valuable service in the market in terms of price discovery and uncovering fundamental flaws and fradulent practises.  Their work is usually substantially more in depth than that of long side analysts (it has to be because of the risk they take).  Short selling can also be an important part of risk reducing hedging strategies. Thanks for your response.  I should have referred to the naked shorting which is my concern as well.  What are your thoughts on the uptick rule, do you think it should be reinstated?
