Prudent?

The President of Shopify said on BNN this evening that he was trying to be "prudent" in his forward guidance of future earnings in the quarterly report they gave yesterday. Why would the President of a tech company like Shopify want to be prudent in his quarterly report in an investing environment like we're in right now. If anything he should have been as positive as he could possibly be for investors when reporting in an inflationary environment with interest rates rising. That's what investors were looking for, and he should have known that. His prudence cost investors big time today.

Really? How much would going that route have popped the share price, and what do you think would happen to the share price when they come in way under his inflated guidance in their numbers for the rest of the year, not to mention the blow to his credibility in overpromising and underdelivering.....? Most well-run large cap companies know they need to win the trust of analysts / the investment ...more

You may as well be the CEO because you don't seem to have any common sense in reporting the guidance of future Shopify earnings from this last report either. Why do you think he was on BNN soon after the report trying to do damage control? Because he had a great quarterly report and he downplayed it and investors lost big time instead of winning, which is what should have happened with this ...more

We will see if guidance proves correct in future quarters thanks to the prudence. Considering current interest rates, stubborn inflation, and the likelihood of a recession at some point in 2023, it's best to be conservative with guidance at this point IMO. It's about underpromising and overdelivering, especially with tech stocks in this type of environment. Otherwise, if you're a buy ...more
