Suncor Energy Inc > Just asking some SU holders...

Just asking some SU holders...

Where they stand.....As i've just gotten off the Athabasca forum, by addressing some of the crazy comments people make there, i'd be interested in what some you think regarding a possible development which would directly implicate Suncor.

We all KNOW that Suncor is in a bad place right now, chuck full of problems, desperate to find it's footing in this new paradigm and move on with their "highly contraversial" operations. And we all KNOW that Suncor is "actively" looking" around to pickup some accretive assets which would compliment its own operations. In addition, we're all aware that Suncor has been in "ongoing" negoations with Total, for some time now, for the possible acquisition of their interest in Fort Hills. They've already struck out once in trying to acquire those assets, if they strike out again and don't come to mtually agreed upon deal with Total, then what's next?

So this is my question to you, IF Suncor mgmt FAIL to acquire/secure Total's interest in Fort Hill's, would you have a problem if they go after someone like MEG or Athabasca and pay a VERY hefty premium to acquire them? And if you don't have an issue with Suncor trying to secure anyone of those two assets, would you prefer for SU to buyout Meg for ~$12B or Athabasca for $3-$4B? Because it seems either Meg or ATH is on the verge of being bought out, maybe even both in time, and someone like Sucor could be one of the possible suitors

Do you even care what they do with M&A?

Are either Meg or Athabaska a better deal than SU buying back its own shares ? If so , why ?
Comment by matt2018 on Aug 03, 2023 12:27pm
Oldnagger..... that all depends on SU plans for the future. Sure we will get clearer pic on Aug 14th. Others in the space (with long life assets) are just content to keep current operations as is and buyback shares and grow the div. If SU wants/needs to grow production then they may be looking but both of these have been on incredible runs and trading at over 5+ year highs. ATH is a smaller ...more

I think securing ownership for future bitumen supply for the baseplant is not as critical as most believe.  I drink milk daily but I don't have to own the cow. I do not believe that Suncor's baseplant and upgrader will sit idle if the base plant mine expansion is not approved, or it fails to secure 100% ownership of Fort Hills. There are many possibilities for long term supply deals ...more

Thanks guys, my real reason for asking, is that I am currently a holder of Pipestone which is subject to a take over by Strathcona a private company. It seems that Strathcona is valuing its heavy Crude assets at somewhere north of 70 thousand dollars per flowing barrel . Even though. i like the prospects for heavy crude in Canada, I am not sure who else could  give me a bigger bang for my ...more

- so the TIGHT-FISTED WATEROUS ENERGY FUND is using Pipestone Energy Corp. as a STALKING HORSE public equity market valuation since they will be owning ~ 91% of the NEW and IMPROVED “Strathcona Resources Ltd.” merger while the current PIPE shareholders will own ~ 9% - judging by their past history, I NEVER TRUSTED these guys although they were VERY GOOD at ACQUIRING high-quality assets ON THE ...more

Thanks for the heads up. According to the financial post , Stathcona will not relinquish any equity other than the 9 % for Pipestone. Seeing that Pipestone already has a high percentage of institutional ownership , that leaves retail investors utterly screwed.  Is this a sign of things to come ? Well , hopefully not. Canada has tremendous bounty in the Petroleum sector and investors have ...more

Migraine - I am not so sure about this. Right now, to the best of my knowledge SU provides all the necessary feedstock for its upgraders and theur current plan as illustrated in their PRs is to keep doing that.  This means that the other producers in the area are using various other means to make their production ready for shipment without a need for SU and its upgraders. The question then ...more

- ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION that Suncor Energy WANTS/DESIRES 100% total ownership and control of the bitumen feedstock that is inputed into their HIGHLY-PRIZED upgraders producing the PREMIUM -PRICED SCO - it is their # 1 STRATEGIC ACQUISITION PRIORITY - they have MANY YEARS to IMPLEMENT IT but I say the earlier the better given the highly uncertain future conditions - given the strong likelyhood ...more

- it is NOT for me to DECIDE as I am SOLIDLY in the MEG camp - I believe that RIGHT NOW, any TAKEOVER BID of MEG Energy for LESS than $35 per share will be OUTRIGHT REJECTED by the MEG BODs - it is also my belief that Suncor Energy CANNOT WIN a BIDDING WAR for MEG with Cenovus Energy being the PRIME OPPOSITION since the MEG/CVE SYNERGIES are HUGE compared to MEG/SU {MEG Chistina Lake SAGD is on ...more

Not wanting to add more shares to the company float shouldnt be a deciding factor in making a deal. Not if it will significantly add to FCF.  The game is to make $billions, as many of them as possible. Issue I have with a possible MEG deal (as much as I would benefit as well), it has gone on such a run and sits at a 5+ year high and they will want a premium on top of that as well. Now is the ...more

One thing to consider is Total is a European company. In Europe the environmental movement seems to be stronger and taken more seriously and appears to get more policy enacted. Certainly much more than the States at least. It could be Total doesn't want the reputational damage of having a small stake in the 'dirty' Canadian oil sands anymore.
