At least one cottager on the lake thinks so, based on a depth-sounding mission he undertook in his boat.
“There’s lots of spots where I got to, you know, 200, 300, 400 feet,” he said. “Then all of a sudden my fish finder just stopped working and I thought, wow, it can’t track the bottom anymore — and then I realized what that might be.”
He said he circled around and found the same spot a second time. “I watched the water go precipitously down, from 400 feet to 700, 800, 900 feet.”
That was the point — 900 feet, nearly twice the official deepest point — at which the fish finder couldn’t pick up a further reading.
https://www.thesudburystar.com/news/local-news/finding-points-to-deep-hole-on-floor-of-wanapitei The aerticle above is a good read- now does it prove a meteor hit Lake Wanapitei ?
Well... more proof would be needed for my eyes. and mind..lol
Now... in the article above it does show a pic of ... Apollo 17 astronaut Jack Schmitt, centre, visits Boland’s Bay on Lake Wanapitei in July 1972, a few months prior to his expedition to the moon. Bob Cameron, chair of Laurentian University’s geology department at the time, is holding a small boulder containing fragments from the impact of a meteor. Geologist Mike Dence, who published a study that identified the lake as a crater that year, looks on at right. Publishing a study that identified the lake as a crater is well, an opinion.
Just my own thoughts.
Now... if one has keen eyes, the excerpt states - the rock hosts - fragments of a meteor - which points to how did the fragments become entrapped with in the - rock ?
Ahhhh....
Would be nice ot see a clearer picture of the rock to determine the characteristics and know
if the rock is - Rhyolite in nature ( carbonate lime )
Why do i say this ? Simply put - it would segway with the poster on ceo.ca months ago - that mentioned broken glass like minerals were found on the shores of, Lake Wanapitei -
Limestone - if the conditions are right ( extreme heat ) can turn into marlbe or glass.
Throw in - really deep lake - and it might spell =
major fault zone. If the rock the greologist is holding is comprised of limestone or salt carbonates,
it would certain,y support a former flooded area whereras the carbonates recemented and encapsulated other mineras with in.
Which might also segway into - how the chlorite and gold might have eneded up in this Scad area.
Huron tied to Wanapetei - deep fauilt zone - and now throw in hydrotherma lfluids of carbonates and gold - add in wave action and tides - dispersing the liberated gold into valley pockets - creating - pillar style deposits due to bay area wave action....?
Thus... a potential theory of how the - Pillar / Cone style deposits formed .
Just open thoughts.
Anyways...
It is an interesting article.
Now... there are other lakes ( Northenr ) that i've been on whereas, the tranducer simply cou;ld not detect the bottom of the lake - bottomless zones - i've come across this on a few lakes - yeah... did a double triple take checking the transducer - which had no fault -only to track back over the same troll path and see the fish finder not able ot find the bottom due to the extreme depth - which i was already quite deep fishing for Lake Trout.
Cheers...
