The COVID-19 pandemic is 'most certainly not over,' WHO's health chief says

Almost 1 billion people in lower-income countries still not vaccinated: UN agency

The COVID-19 pandemic is "most certainly not over," the head of the World Health Organization warned Sunday, despite a decline in reported cases since the peak of the Omicron wave. He told governments that "we lower our guard at our peril."

The United Nations health agency's director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, told officials gathered in Geneva for the opening of the WHO's annual meeting that "declining testing and sequencing means we are blinding ourselves to the evolution of the virus." He also noted that almost one billion people in lower-income countries still haven't been vaccinated.

In a weekly report issued Thursday on the global situation, WHO said the number of new COVID-19 cases appears to have stabilized after weeks of decline since late March, and the overall number of weekly deaths dropped.

While there has been progress, with 60 per cent of the world's population vaccinated, "it's not over anywhere until it's over everywhere," Tedros said.

"Reported cases are increasing in almost 70 countries in all regions — and this in a world in which testing rates have plummeted."

COVID-19 pandemic not over 'until it’s over everywhere,' WHO head says

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the WHO, told officials gathered in Geneva for the opening of the agency's annual meeting that 'declining testing and sequencing means we are blinding ourselves to the evolution of the virus.'

Reported deaths are rising in Africa, the continent with the lowest vaccination coverage, he said, and only 57 countries — almost all of them wealthy — have vaccinated 70 per cent of their people.

While the world's vaccine supply has improved, there is "insufficient political commitment to roll out vaccines" in some countries, gaps in "operational or financial capacity" in others, he said.

"In all, we see vaccine hesitancy driven by misinformation and disinformation," Tedros said. "The pandemic will not magically disappear, but we can end it."

Tedros is expected to be appointed for a second five-year term this week at the World Health Assembly, the annual meeting of the WHO's member countries.

Why would you believe one thing that this organization says, these are the same people that want to rule every nation thru health fake news!

Of course it's not over, it can actually get worse, I hope not. I personally don't think vaccination is going to solve the problem, if you look at some countries, higher vaccination rate did not stop the spread, but that's just my view. But testing is helpful, here in Vancouver we are allowed to get free test kit which has 5 free quick tests in a box, I think we can get one box free ...more

Being much younger - only 82 - I avoided the covid for over two years. I took the two shots and then the booster. Two weeks ago I woke up feeling like I had been run over by a truck. Did a covid test and tested negative. Did another test the second day and tested positive. The run over by a truck feeling lasted 4 days. After that it was basically a run down, tired feeling for another 4 days ...more

Sorry to hear but glad you're on the mend.

Thanks dirtydzn. It was not the big issue that we had feared for two years. Maybe that was because of the vaccines, and if so, that is good, but with all that info being pushed from both sides we will likely never really know the truth. It was like a bad flu episode (which I have not had for about 15 - 20 years) but without the gastrointestinal distress at both ends. Just a general lousy feeling. ...more

@pandora, I had a similar experience early Jan probably got it on one of 4 flights I had to take in 24 hrs while traveling abroad). My wife just getting out of it herself. The vaccine doesn't prevent you from catching covid per se but prevents you from having harsher symptoms. This said, with the immunity I've built with 3 shots and getting it in Jan, I've had no issues this time ...more

Did you gargle salt water?  I heard it is very effective. Before virus attacks lung, it likes to hang out in the throatt area, so when one feels sore throat, he may have only a few days to deal with it, like using salt water to kill the virus, or the virus will begin to attack lung, and that's not good. The first sign I feel something is wrong, I use salt water right away, every time I ...more

Actually I have used the salt water gargle before for sore throat type problems but for whatever reason I did not think to use it at this time. I sucked on a bunch of Hall's throat lozenges.

I know it's better than hydrogen peroxide, which smells terrible, and my dentist would ask his customers to gargle hydrogen peroxice and that's gross. I hope you get better soon!!  But still you don't want to get too close to others because re-infection can occur and it has.
