Road to New Nuclear 2024 - Paris

Energy and Industry Minister Ebba Busch leads international conference on new nuclear power Published September 19, 2024 Today, Energy and Food Minister Ebba Busch is in Paris to co-chair the Roadmaps to New Nuclear conference with William D. Magwood, IV, Director General of the OECD's Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). The conference, organized by NEA, brings together ministers and senior business representatives from around the world. - Now we take the declaration from COP28 further and discuss concrete measures for how we can better cooperate for the expansion of new nuclear power. If we are to meet our climate commitments in combination with economic growth, new nuclear power will be absolutely decisive. I look forward to chairing the conference together with Director General Magwood, says Minister of Energy and Industry Ebba Busch. In connection with the UN climate negotiations in December 2024, COP28, some 20 countries decided to come together on a declaration of strengthened cooperation in the field of nuclear power with the aim of tripling the global nuclear power capacity by 2050. Development of new nuclear power is a key factor in limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The conference in Paris will now take the declaration further and discuss more concretely how the countries can together realize the cooperation. The conference has three focus areas: financing, competence provision and value chains for new nuclear power. Among the participating countries are the USA, Great Britain, Ukraine, South Korea, Canada and Romania. A number of Swedish companies will also participate in the conference, including Vattenfall, Fortum, Krnfull Next and Blykalla.
