AI Super power
AI Super powerA day earlier at a roundtable in Paris, Trudeau said that the need for more electricity to power artificial intelligence will be a key topic of discussion at the G7 this year, as Canada assumes the presidency of the multinational body. He said increased power generation shouldn't come at the expense of addressing climate change — and nuclear energy should play a role. (Canadian Press Feb 11). AI Action Summit in Paris.
-----------------
BC has had to revise upwards its electricity demand. Oceanic in their MD&A says 10000MW province wide will be needed now. The BC Gov't says demand from 29 industry proposals for the NW region could take up 2.5 Site C dams. How does BC Hydro design a new transmission line when such large numbers are spoken of? What if the transmission line being planned now falls short as the anticipated demand materializes?
Will there be capacity to support power from offshore to Prince George and beyond, any export from offshore wind to feed the AI ambitions? Green clean energy required. A lot of pressing questions. Now I hear snow pack is 72% of normal. Again BC Hydro may have to import electricity. Maybe this time more expensive, as the US is pursuing their own AI power energy security.
I don't mind nuclear's role in provinces like Ontario for AI.. Could act as backup to wind power also. But will take years to build.
A strong case for offshore wind. Maybe electricity would be more expensive, but a gut feel there will be data centers green, hydrogen producers and maybe LNG willing to pay for it. The difference will not be that great the way Oceanic is talking. They maintain competitive prices can be had with offshore.
Anyway, their Management Information Circular is out. Approval of all nominiees for the Board of Directors, is recommended. Nothing said about the special meeting, but a discussion is required about the company's future path. Maybe the size of the windfarm proposal should be expanded. That in turn depends on BC Hydro's plans for new transmission infrastructure. Only logical that Oceanic and BC Hydro should be talking now.
