The Patent They Wish They Had
2013 President's Message
Looking at the headline-stealing news of the last few months, it’s clear patents have become a major force in the technology industry. Many companies, huge companies, have made a point of patenting everything they can in order to own influential technologies. Enter SwiftShader...
Last week, TransGaming announced it has secured a patent for the key proprietary technology that forms the core of our SwiftShader product. It is now protected by multiple patent offices across various jurisdictions, meaning we fully control a truly impactful technology that has industry-changing implications.
For those unfamiliar with SwiftShader, it is quite simply the world's fastest pure-software 3D graphics renderer. I'll skip the technical details since they're available in our recent white paper (https://transgaming.com/swiftshader), but in essence with the patent-protected SwiftShader, any product or technology that incorporates 3D rendering can achieve high quality graphics without the need for a separate and expensive graphics processing chip (also known as a GPU).
The potential impact of the technology is in reshaping all computer graphics by allowing application developers to run their software on any system, regardless of what GPU that system has (if any). The long-term impact cannot even be easily estimated, given the technology’s high likelihood to disrupt the entire computing industry. SwiftShader points the way for future hardware that combines aspects of both GPUs and CPUs. THAT is why so many companies are now looking at the patent with unadulterated envy. The significance of this patent to TransGaming cannot be overstated. Without exaggeration, we are architecting the future.
The convergence of the CPU and the GPU, as we rapidly move to multi-core architectures, is inevitable and is simply a function of time. There are a number of pioneering companies who already embrace TransGaming's SwiftShader vision; Google, Adobe, Citrix, and many more have already licensed the technology from us on long-term, multi-year contracts. Applications of SwiftShader are broad, from web browsers like Google's Chrome, to medical and defense imaging software, and everything in-between. That’s not an exaggeration. Any product, ANY, that renders 3D images is a potential licensee of SwiftShader. Let that sink in for a moment. The wide reaching implications and importance of SwiftShader start to become quite apparent very quickly. Imagine any one of the popular hand-held devices in the market today start utilizing SwiftShader as their graphics rendering solution of choice instead of a GPU. The possibilities for TransGaming are limitless but think of the advantages for that device maker: using a chip with processing cores which can switch easily between graphics rendering, general tasks, and perhaps radio processing means lower costs for hardware development and deployment.
SwiftShader’s growing list of licensees are just scratching the surface of the possible applications, and we are consistently getting new inquiries from companies with exciting new ways to apply our technology. SwiftShader is quickly becoming a lucrative, recurring revenue source for TransGaming, and it’s no surprise given the sheer scope of the technology. As more and more begin to see the writing on the wall and move to a software rendering solution, we'll be here to empower them. In one swift stroke (no pun intended), TransGaming has laid the groundwork for the disruption of an entire industry. Again.
To TransGaming and countless tech industries, SwiftShader is truly a high impact, disruptive technology. To our competition (when they eventually appear), this will always be the patent they wish they had.
Sincerely,
