Billboard Buzz: Planes, Trains and "Rusty" Wheelchairs?

Embattled CEO Sam Ataya (Board member) along with his brother Rabih Ataya, director of Special projects (Board member) of Western Magnesium stated that “wheelchairs” were the top target of its metal being produced using LOW COST American Labor.  When asked about that production from moderator, Mr Ataya seemed confused and ill-prepared and quickly changed the subject.
Upon research to substantiate the claims of Ataya, Sadly, 3 million Americans are wheelchair confined in the US. “So Lite” Wheel Chairs of America makes a 19 Lb version selling for $499.00 that has less than 5% steel in it and can hold 400 Lbs. (not much metal there to replace Sam).  In reaching out to Karman Manufacturing the leading makers of wheelchairs in the WORLD, the question was asked to their product development lead (Steven Montgomery).  “What is your demand for a lighter metal like Magnesium?”, Answer, “We don’t have any demand for Magnesium, although lighter than steel it CORRODES when exposed to Oxygen, there are far better materials to use that are more cost effective”

WHAT???  Zero Demand and is basically RUSTS?  Hey WM, how are you accounting for rust?  That WILL be a Zoom call question so get ready for it Sam!  Lets see how bewildered you look then.  This was huge you brought this up to fact check you on.

3 mins of research.

Magnesium is extremely reactive in nature.  The corrosion resistance of magnesium or magnesium parts which is lower than most metals depends on the electrochemical activity of magnesium, the relative importance of some factors is greatly amplified when exposed to oxygen.

The type of environment (space, rural atmosphere, marine atmosphere, elevated temperature etc), the surface condition of the part (such as as cast, treated, and painted), and the assembly practice. In most environments, magnesium parts can be severely damaged and corrode at high rates.

I can hear the excuses now.  “Sam Ataya and his Brother Rabih Ataya vow to rid the world of Oxygen to slow the extremely corrosive and reactive nature of Magnesium, we need 3-4 more years to figure that out though”

Awaiting a response to this new development from WM

Interesting about the rust, yes it's true that magnesium rusts easy and needs a protective coating, I was just reading about another manufacturer of end user stamped parts that shut down citing that (cost of coatings) as one reason but for the life of me can't find the link in my history. I believe they had other reasons as well but the rust I wasn't aware of. I would think that ...more
