VTR = Risk Asset

To be in tune with the market we have to know the lingo. Part of the frustration for investors in the junior gold sector is that market is not moving in accordance with the following basic thesis: 1. governments are debasing their currencies by printing money; 2. gold has always been safe harbour for value throughout the centuries; 3. junior mining companies that discover or produce gold will be wonderfully leveraged for outstanding gains when general public flocks to gold as a safe harbour during final stages of currency crisis;

The above may be a good thesis for a long term investment but it is not certain and in any event it is not happening now. What is in fact happening in current markets is that we are teetering back and forth between risk-on and risk off markets. Last year was risk off and that's why our sector was hammered. We need to stop thinking of VTR as gold and a safe harbour in current markets. VTR is a tiny gold mining company engaged in one of the riskiest enterprises on the face of the earth: building a gold mine; and its doing so in a region of the world where governments often come to power through force, ie. coups involving machine guns. So VTR is the epitomy of a risk asset. Stop thinking of it as a store of value. You are being paid for staring down the nervous Nellies and insuring this risky enterprise with the confidence that the worse in all probability will not happen and common sense will prevail and the smart people at Volta will succeed. The good news is the rally for risk assets is back on. See article below:
