Toronto & New York (The Canadian Press) - The Toronto stock market closed in positive territory Friday after investors took in rising commodity prices and mixed Canadian economic data.
The S&P/TSX composite index added 60.33 points to 13,494.63, with the gold-heavy materials index leading the way higher. The TSX Venture exchange gained 20.55 points to 2,059.6.
Wall Street markets were mixed with the Dow Jones industrial average down 43.25 points to 12,681.16, while the Nasdaq added 24.4 points to 2,858.83. The S&P index was up 1.22 points to 1,345.02.

Brown & Brown, Inc., announced the settlement of its lawsuit against former employees, Jim W. Henderson, Thomas E. Riley, Eric A. Anderson, Stanley K. Kinnett, II, Paul A. Vredenburg, and their new company, AssuredPartners, Inc. "We are satisfied with the settlement in this litigation, and we believe this matter was resolved appropriately within the judicial system," said J. AltaGas Ltd. (TSX: T.ALA, Stock Forum)
AltaGas Ltd. announced that the ratification vote by the Tahltan Nation on the proposed McLymont Creek and Volcano Creek Impact Benefit Agreements (IBA) as announced on June 1, 2011, will now take place September 9 to September 15, 2011. In addition, the Tahltan Central Council will be issuing a Notice of Vote to Tahltan membership, which initiates the formal voting process on or before July 27, 2011. The delay is not expected to impact the schedules for either project.
