Canada’s main stock index gave up gains made in the previous session and posted a decline in Tuesday trading as the technology and health care sectors helped lead the way lower.

It was a rough day south of the border, with the NASDAQ losing more than 2% amid steep declines in megacap growth stocks and highly valued technology companies, which pushed Wall Street below record trading levels. Investors were seeking shelter in more defensive parts of the market.

The Canadian dollar traded for 81.11 cents US compared with 81.44 cents US on Monday.
Crude oil prices were up $1.18 to $65.67.
The price of gold was up 8.61 to $1,771.66.
In world markets, the Nikkei remained at 28,812.63, the Hang Seng was up 199.60 points to 28,557.14, the FTSE was down 46.64 points to 6,923.17, and the DAX was down 379.99 points to 14,856.46.
