A bipartisan US infrastructure spending deal may have pushed solid gains on Wall Street on Friday, but Canada’s main stock exchange wasn’t so lucky. Despite starting the day on broad gains, the TSX was dragged lower by declines by losses among the tech, health care, and energy sectors, though it did manage to climb just into positive territory by market close.
The S&P 500 index followed the footsteps of the NASDAQ from earlier this week when it hit a record high on Friday, boosted by gains in Nike and bank stocks, while weaker-than-expected inflation data eased worries about a sudden tapering in stimulus by the Federal Reserve.

The Canadian dollar traded for 81.36 cents US compared with 81.20 cents US on Thursday.
Crude oil prices were up $0.67 to $73.97.
The price of gold was up 3.75 to $1,779.08.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 190.95 of a point to 29,066.18, the Hang Seng was up 405.76 points to 29,288.22, the FTSE was up 26.10 points to 7,1036.07, and the DAX was up 18.74 points to 15,607.97.
