Canada’s main stock index closed lower in Wednesday trading as the energy and base metal sectors fell.
US stock markets also moved lower. With the country facing faster-than-anticipated inflation and a new rise in coronavirus infections, a combination that could pull the Fed’s outlook in opposing directions, US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggested that inflation ‘will likely remain elevated in coming months’ before ‘moderating’.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.02 cents US compared with 79.91 cents US on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were down $2.44 to $72.81.
The price of gold was up 19.37 to $1,825.36.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 109.75 points to 28,608.49, the Hang Seng was down 175.95 points to 27,787.46 the FTSE was down 33.53 points to 7,091.19 and the DAX was down 0.66 of a point to 15,788.98.
