Gains in the base metals sector kept Canada’s main stock index in the green on Thursday, despite mounting losses among the telecom, utilities, and health care sectors taking a few bites out of the TSX.
Mega-cap tech stocks led early gains for the NASDAQ ahead of a weekly unemployment report that gave investors insight to gauge the strength of the labor market … but those gains quickly turned south as it closed lower, along with the S&P 500 Worries about higher inflation and positive economic data have consumed trader attention on Wall Street. Investors have been taken surprise by a sooner-than expected dramatic shift by the Federal Reserve on its monetary policy, that hinges on an equitable recovery of the jobs market.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.70 cents US compared with 80.02 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were down $1.60 to $71.53.
The price of gold was up 2.85 to $1,829.33.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 329.40 points to 28,279.09, the Hang Seng was up 208.81 points to 27,996.27 the FTSE was down 79.17 points to 7,012.02 and the DAX was down 159.32 points to 15,629.66.
