A broad decline for all sectors except tech took Canada’s main index lower by three digits to hit its lowest level in two months on Monday. Energy stocks tumbled following a more than 3% drop in oil prices in the face of an OPEC deal to boost production.
Rising numbers of COVID-19 cases with the global spread the Delta variant spooked investors and saw markets sink right out of the gate. Many fear that the Delta variant could threaten the US economic recovery. Shares of companies that were widely thought to benefit most from the reopening of the economy were hit the hardest.

The Canadian dollar traded for 78.32 cents US compared with 79.41 cents US on Friday.
Crude oil prices were down $5.84 to $65.94.
The price of gold was down 4.62 to $1,811.09.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 350.34 points to 27,652.74, the Hang Seng was down 514.90 points to 27,489.78 the FTSE was down 167.47 points to 6,840.62 and the DAX was down 407.11 points to 15,133.20.
