Canada’s main stock index continued its climb higher on Thursday, boosted by mining (speficially a jump in gold prices), financials, energy, and industrials gains. Meanwhile, the health care, tech, and telecom sectors closed lower.

Futures tracking US markets rose as comments from the Federal Reserve that the US economic recovery was on track lifted economically sensitive stocks. Main indexes had come off record highs on fears of a sooner-than-expected tapering in monetary policy as well as concerns that a rise in cases of the Delta COVID variant would hurt an economic rebound.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.35 cents US compared with 79.58 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were up $1.25 to $73.64.
The price of gold was up 20.10 to $1,829.24.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 200.76 points to 27,782.42, the Hang Seng was up 841.44 points to 26,315.32 the FTSE was up 61.79 points to 7,078.42 and the DAX was up 70.11 points to 15,640.47.
