Canada’s main stock index moved higher on Tuesday on support from gains among the metals, financials, and energy sectors. The loonie also flew higher as a rebound in oil prices offset broader gains for the US dollar, with investors tracking US inflation data for clues on the outlook for Federal Reserve policy.

Wall Street’s main indexes closed flat as investors digested a Senate vote on a much-anticipated $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill. The Senate has turned its attention to a $3.5 trillion in additional investments to jump-start road and bridge-building projects over the next five years and new social programs over the next decade. New COVID-19 cases are rising steadily in the United States to a six-month high, averaging 100,000 for three days in a row. Progress on the infrastructure package is expected to help gauge fiscal support for the next leg of recovery in the world's largest economy.

Crude oil prices were up $2.00 to $68.48.
The price of gold was down 3.06 to $1,728.61.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 68.11 points to 27,888.15, the Hang Seng was up 322.22 points to 26,605.62 the FTSE was up 28.74 points to 7,161.04 and the DAX was up 25.30 points to 15,770.71.
