The energy and base metals sectors helped Canada’s main stock index post a triple-digit advance in Friday trading as the price of oil also climbed higher.

Main indexes south of the border moved higher as oil majors rose tracking crude prices, while big banks were also up. Investors now turn their attention to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech for clues on when the central bank will start paring back its large stimulus program. Wall Street has lost ground, boiling concerns over developments in Afghanistan have seen a streak of all-time closing highs come to a halt, while fears of a potential shift in US Federal Reserve policy prompted a broad but shallow sell-off the day before the Jackson Hole Symposium.
