Financial sector strength couldn't boost Canada’s Main Stock Index higher on Tuesday. Mounting losses from the energy, health care, and industrials indexes combined to keep the TSX lower. Markets were closed on Monday for the Labour Day holiday.

Wall Street indexes saw a split close on worries over the slowing pace of economic recovery overshadowed hopes that the Federal Reserve would maintain its accommodative stance a little longer after a soft US payrolls report. Microsoft eased, while Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Google-owner - Alphabet Inc. moved slightly higher.

Crude oil prices were down $0.88 to $68.41.
The price of gold was down 29.22 to $1,794.74.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 256.25 points to 29,916.14, the Hang Seng was up 190.00 points to 26,353.63 the FTSE was down 37.81 points to 7,149.37 and the DAX was down 89.03 points to 15,843.09.
