A broad decline that saw losses in the energy and base metals sectors helped lead Canada's main stock index lower in Tuesday trading.

Wall Street indexes fell on uncertainty over a possible increase in corporate taxes, even though slowing growth in monthly consumer prices eased some fears of the Federal Reserve reducing stimulus early. Energy and financials pulled back and were the worst performers. Major technology stocks continued to lag. Investors are watching to see if President Joe Biden's $3.5 trillion budget package, which is expected to include a proposed corporate tax rate hike to 26.5% from 21%, passes. Data from the Labor Department showed underlying consumer prices rose at their slowest pace in six months in August, suggesting that inflation had probably peaked.

The price of gold was up 11.32 to $1,804.38.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 222.73 points to 30,670.10, the Hang Seng was down 311.58 points to 25,502.23, the FTSE was down 34.37 points to 7,034.06, and the DAX was up 21.57 points to 15,722.99.
