Scaling a new record high on Tuesday, gains earned by Canada’s main stock index were helped by miners gaining on the back of rising commodity prices and encouraging corporate earnings. The materials sector, which includes precious and base metals miners and fertilizer companies, led the gainers. Financials, which account for nearly a third of the Toronto market's value, continued gains for the fourth straight session.

After big banks kicked off the Q3 2021 reporting period on a positive note last week, US stock indexes moved higher as upbeat results and forecasts from Travelers and Johnson & Johnson fired up risk appetite. Investors are now focusing on results from companies that are more exposed to supply chain constraints, price rises and labour shortages.

Crude oil prices were up $0.41 to $82.85.
The price of gold was up 6.26 to $1,770.02.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 190.06 points to 29,215.52, the Hang Seng was up 377.46 points to 25,787.21, the FTSE was up 13.70 points to 7,217.53, and the DAX was up 41.36 points to 15,515.83.
