Broad gains led by the technology sector helped lead the Toronto Stock Exchange upward as Canada's main stock index posted an increase of more than 200 points in on Thursday, following some lacklustre performances earlier this week.

The Dow and S&P 500 resumed their advances even after a new print on US economic activity came in weaker-than-expected. The NASDAQ Composite jumped more than 1% to set a record intraday high.

Crude oil prices were up $0.18 to $82.84.
The price of gold was up 2.13 to $ 1,798.83.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 278.15 points to 28,820.09, the Hang Seng was down 73.01points to 25,555.73, the FTSE was down 3.80 points to 7,249.47, and the DAX was down 9.48 points to 15,696.33.
