Equities in Canada’s main stock index were higher on Wednesday, ahead of an expected move by the US Federal Reserve to trim pandemic-era stimulus, with weakness in energy stocks also souring sentiment. The Fed will slow its pace of asset purchases, the first step in paring back its COVID-era easy money policies. Health care stocks, along with financials, moved higher.
US markets were higher as investors tracked the Fed’s moves to see if it begins tapering bond purchases from November. Investors are waiting for the outcome of the crucial Fed FOMC meeting that will end later today. Strong Q3 2021 earnings results have reaffirmed solid fundamentals of the economy, boosting market participants’ confidence on equities.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.50 cents US compared with 80.62 cents US on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were down $3.48 to $80.42.
The price of gold was down 14.80 to $ 1,772.54.
In world markets, the Nikkei remained at 29,520.90, the Hang Seng was down 74.92 points to 25,024.75, the FTSE was down 25.92 points to 7,248.89, and the DAX was up 5.53 points to 15,959.98.
