Just when things started to look like they were cooling down for Canada’s main stock index, the TSX rose to a new high during Thursday trading, riding gains in energy and mining shares, while positive earnings from Canadian Natural Resources and upbeat economic data also lifted sentiment.
US markets were split, but the tech-heavy NASDAQ came out of the gate strong with its own record open, propelled by a wave of impressive earnings reports and as investors shrugged off the Federal Reserve's first steps to begin paring its pandemic-era support.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.30 cents US compared with 80.53 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were down $1.18 to $79.68.
The price of gold was up 16.42 to $ 1,793.22.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 273.47 points to 29,794.37, the Hang Seng was up 200.44 points to 25,225.19, the FTSE was up 31.02 points to 7,248.89, and the DAX was up 7,279.91 points to 16,029.65.
