Canada’s main stock index hit another record high on Monday, boosted by gains in health care and commodity-linked stocks, with sentiment getting a boost from the $1-trillion US infrastructure bill that was passed. The utilities sector was the lone decliner.
US stock indexes traded around record levels, with construction-related companies making some of the strongest gains after Congress passed its major infrastructure bill. Technology stocks were also among the strongest and helped to offset losses for utilities and companies that sell directly to consumers. Wall Street has been climbing steadily over the last month as a wave of reports has shown corporate profits were stronger during the summer than analysts expected. Investors’ concerns about inflation and the Federal Reserve starting to pull back on its massive efforts to support markets and the economy have been somewhat alleviated.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.29 cents US compared with 80.24 cents US on Friday.
Crude oil prices were up $0.95 to $82.22.
The price of gold was up 8.59 to $1,824.82.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 104.52 points to 29,507.05, the Hang Seng was down 106.74 points to 24,763.77, the FTSE was down 3.56 points to 7,300.40, and the DAX was down 7.84 points to 16,046.52.
