Early declines in tech shares and miners pushed Canada’s main stock index lower on Monday, as gold prices slumped. The energy and financial markets moved higher.

Energy and bank stocks recovered slightly from last week's losses to push Wall Street markets higher, while upcoming economic data and the announcement that President Joe Biden picked Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to lead the bank for a second term, keeping the status quo as the central bank plans to wind down pandemic-era stimulus. Demand for technology stocks started strong, with the NASDAQ and S&P 500 index futures hit a record intraday trading highs, only for some gains to temper by close.
