Canada’s main stock index gained ground on Thursday against persistent worries about the latest COVID-19 variant and the likelihood for the US Fed could speed up its stimulus tapering. The Canadian dollar dove lower against its US counterpart, holding near its lowest level in more than two months. Global equity markets remain volatile, with European stocks sinking, as countries impose new travel restrictions.
As global stocks attempted to rebound from the latest Omicron-driven sell-off, many US markets rallied as investors weighed Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s comments on bond-buying and inflation. Indicators, could this be a sign that the Fed is set to become more aggressive in tackling inflation by raising interest rates and cutting back on bond buying? Apple Inc fell along with its suppliers Qualcomm, Skyworks, and Qorvo, stifling NASDAQ gains after reports about slowing demand for the iPhone 13.

Crude oil prices were up $1.02 to $66.59.
The price of gold was down 14.73 to $ 1,767.40.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 182.25 points to 27,753.37, the Hang Seng was up 130.01 points to 23,788.93, the FTSE was down 30.84 points to 7,137.84, and the DAX was down 209.56 points to 15,263.11.
