Canada’s main stock index closed up more than 300 points in Tuesday trading in a broad-based rally as fears about the impact of the latest COVID-19 variant lessened and the price of oil surged back over $70 a barrel. News of the Omicron variant injected volatility into the markets last week.

South of the border, US stocks also closed significantly higher as technology firms bounced back on easing concerns around the Omicron variant, while Intel jumped after plans to take its self-driving car unit public. As investors rotated into sectors like energy, some high-flying growth stocks were battered in recent days, but banks that stand to perform better in a tightened US monetary policy environment.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.05 cents US compared with 78.25 cents US on Monday.
Crude oil prices were up 32.11 to $72.60.
The price of gold was up 2.62 to $1,783.50.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 528.23 points to 28,455.60, the Hang Seng was up 634.28 points to 23,983.66, the FTSE was up 107.62 points to 7,339.90, and the DAX was up 433.15 points to 15,813.94.
