As crude prices weakened following increased restrictions in parts of the world to counter the Omicron coronavirus variant, futures for Canada’s main stock index fell on Thursday. After measures by some governments to slow the spread of the Omicron variant, oil prices eased though losses were capped by positive comments from vaccine makers. The health care and tech markets moved higher.
Markets struggled to hold on to gains made over the past three sessions, despite fresh data from the US labor department that showed the number of Americans filing initial jobless claims fell to the lowest level in five decades. Weekly jobless claims fell to their lowest level since 1969, below the pre-pandemic average of about 220,000 per week. Investors continue to digest the risks of Omicron infections.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.10 cents US compared with 79.11 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were down 0.78 to $71.58.
The price of gold was down 6.33 to $1,777.31.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 135.15 points to 28,725.47, the Hang Seng was up 257.99 points to 24,254.86, the FTSE was down 15.44 points to 7,321.61, and the DAX was down 47.08 points to 15,640.01.
