Canada's main stock index was relatively flat on Friday, amidst concerns around surging global Omicron cases keeping investor sentiment in check. The rapid spread of Omicron coronavirus cases in the U.S. has driven some companies to postpone plans to get employees back to work, while the number of cases in countries including Denmark, South Africa, and the U.K. has been doubling every two days.

Crude oil prices were down 1.55 to $70.60.
The price of gold was up 4.20 to $1,802.40.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 520.64 points to 28,545.68, the Hang Seng was down 282.87 points to 23,192.63, the FTSE was up 9.31 points to 7,269.92, and the DAX was down 104.71 points to 15,531.69.

Wall Street's main indexes fell on Friday, brought down by cyclical stocks linked closely to the U.S. economy, as investors digested the Federal Reserve's decision to end its pandemic-era stimulus faster.
An announcement from the U.S. Fed earlier this week signaling a ¾ %-point interest rate hike by the end of 2022 to combat surging inflation had sparked a move into cyclical stocks, but those gains proved to be short-lived.
