Canada’s main stock index rose on Friday, on expectations the Omicron coronavirus variant would not significantly disrupt global economic growth, although trading volumes on the markets are likely to be subdued due to the holiday season.

The healthcare sector was boosted by gains in cannabis licensed producers (LP’s), including Aurora Cannabis Inc, Cronos Group Inc, Canopy Growth Corp – all up between 1.13% and 2.7%.

Canadian markets will close early on Friday at 1:30 pm ET and remain shut for Christmas and Boxing Day, Monday and Tuesday.

Word on Wallstreet

Despite the health and economic challenges of COIVID-19 and the Omicron variant, 2021 has turned out to be profitable, so far, for those who had invested in Wall Street. All the three major U.S. indexes – the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the Nasdaq – touched record highs this year. Several factors, including fiscal stimulus packages, the Federal Reserve’s dovish monetary policy stance and robust economic expansion, supported the markets.

The S&P 500 Index, which is considered to be the top measurement for stock market performance, has been performing remarkably well with 28.2% gains in 2019, 18.5% in 2020, and 26.1% to date (as of Dec 23) for 2021.
