Canada's main stock index had a marginal boost Friday, as a strong domestic jobs report fed into global concerns about faster withdrawal of central bank support that has kept investors on edge this week. For now, the stronger-than-expected domestic data raised expectations for the start of a policy tightening cycle by the Bank of Canada in the coming months.

Word on Wallstreet

Wall Street indexes were flat after data confirmed U.S. employment rose far less than expected in December amid worker shortages. Job gains could remain moderate in the near term as spiraling COVID-19 cases disrupt economic activity. Stocks were mixed Friday after the U.S. government reported that just 199,000 jobs were added in December, significantly less than economists expected. However, a record 6.4 million jobs were created in 2021. This was the largest annual increase in employment since record-keeping started in 1939, a milestone hailed by President Joe Biden, who celebrates his first anniversary in the White House on January 20th.
