Canada’s main stock index rose on Wednesday, following Wall Street gains in the wake of U.S. consumer price data that fell mostly in line with expectations, while commodity-linked stocks boosted investor sentiment further.
The energy sector continued its upwards climb – about 1.5% – leading increases on the index as oil prices hit two-month highs on tight supply after easing concerns about the potential hit to demand as a result of the COVID Omicron variant.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.95 cents U.S. today, compared with 79.51 cents U.S. on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were up 1.47 to $82.69.
The price of gold was up 8.30 to $1,826.80.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 543.18 points to 28,765.66, the Hang Seng was up 663.11 points to 24,402.17, the FTSE was up 60.35 points to 7,551.72, and the DAX was up 68.51 points to 16,010.32.

Major U.S. stock indexes rose on Wednesday after expected consumer prices data alleviated some concerns about faster-than-expected interest rate hikes, with mega cap tech stocks providing the biggest boost.
Data from the U.S. Department of Labor showed its Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 0.5% last month after rising 0.8% in November, while in the 12 months through December, the CPI surged 7% to its highest year-on-year (YOY) rise in nearly 40 years.
