Canada’s main stock index suffered under continued negativity from the previous session on Wednesday. Oil prices rose for a fourth day as an outage on a pipeline from Iraq to Turkey increased concerns about an already tight supply outlook. Spot gold also rose. The industrial and utilities sectors also performed well. Led by higher prices for food, vehicles and shelter, Canada’s annual inflation rate accelerated again in December to hit a 30-year high.

It has been a rough start to the Q4 2021 reporting season. US markets began another day in the red as investors grapple with earnings seasons and rising Treasury bond yields. Things rose slightly around on upbeat results from several companies that nudged some stock index futures higher, while big tech stocks tried in vain to make a comeback.

Crude oil prices were up 1.92 to $86.54.
The price of gold was up 26.64 to $1,841.12.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 790.02 points to 27,467.23, the Hang Seng was up 15.07 points to 24,127.85, the FTSE was up 22.84 points to 7,586.39, and the DAX was up 22.51 points to 15,795.07.
