After what seemed like a rebound from a few turbulent trading sectors, early gains led by the tech sector couldn't keep Canada’s main stock index out of the red on Thursday, which saw a 100+ point lead early on, only to lose all that and more by the end of the day with only utilities and industrials posting gains.
South of the border, markets also lost out on early success amid lingering worries over tightening monetary policy, as investors weighed a series of upbeat earnings and a fresh read on weekly jobless numbers out of Washington. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note slid lower after spiking above 1.85% in recent days.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.22 cents US compared with 79.91 cents US on Wednesday.
Crude oil prices were up 0.69 to $87.65.
The price of gold was up 3.45 to $1,841.88.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 305.70 points to 27,772.93, the Hang Seng was up 824.50 points to 24,952.35, the FTSE was down 4.65 points to 7,585.01, and the DAX was up 102.61 points to 15,912.33.
