Canada’s main stock index lost ground on Thursday with most sectors falling into the red as oil prices fell and a sell-off in technology stocks threatened to renew volatility in global equity markets. The country’s banking regulator warned that rising interest rates could prompt a reversal in some housing markets. Shopify continues to be one of the most volatile stocks on the TSX this year. Mining and telecom sectors moved higher.
A steep sell-off on the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite ended four consecutive days of gains on the S&P 500 and the Dow. US markets also moved significantly lower with tech stocks weighing down broader indexes after a weak quarterly earnings report from Facebook parent company Meta. The results from Meta stifled a brief recovery in US markets, which have been under significant pressure this year.

The price of gold was down 2.67 to $ 1,805.23.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 292.29 points to 27,241.31, the Hang Seng remained at 23,802.26, the FTSE was down 54.16 points to 7,528.84, and the DAX was down 245.30 points to 15,368.47.
