Canada’s main stock index edged lower again on Wednesday, as investors wait to see Russia’s next move in its standoff with Ukraine after Western sanctions were imposed on Moscow. Energy and metals were the only gainers in an otherwise broad decline.

Wall Street was down again after modest initial sanctions by Western nations on Moscow. Russia's move to send soldiers to two separatist areas in eastern Ukraine resulted in the United States, Canada, the European Union, Britain, Australia, and Japan advancing their own plans to target banks.

The Canadian dollar traded for 78.73 cents US compared with 78.60 cents US on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were up 0.45 to $92.36.
The price of gold was up 9.21 to $ 1,907.71.
In world markets, the Nikkei remained at 26,449.61, the Hang Seng was up 140.28 points to 23,660.28, the FTSE was up 2.13 points to 7,496.34, and the DAX was down 66.90 points to 14,626.10.
