Stockhouse @ the Bell: Commodity-linked shares take a bite out of the TSX

Extending prior session’s losses, equities in Canada's commodity-heavy main stock index fell on Monday, weighed lower by weakness in energy and mining shares. Commodities lagged as hopes for immediate progress in Ukraine-Russia peace talks faded. The financial and health care sectors moved higher.

Wall Street struggled following signs that Russia was closing in on Kyiv, while bank stocks gained. Oil slid as most share markets firmed on hopes for progress in Russian-Ukraine peace talks even as fighting continues to rage. Bond markets braced for rate rises this week, as it is believed that the Federal Reserve could lift interest rates by 25 basis points at its policy meeting this week and even signal more hikes to come.
