Defying the global risk-off sentiment as the war in Ukraine rages on, Canada’s main stock index climbed higher on Friday, but the benchmark index is likely to record its fourth consecutive weekly gain. While energy and consumer staples fell, the mining and tech sectors climbed higher.

At the end of a choppy week mired by little progress in peace talks to end the war in Ukraine and the first US interest rate hike since 2018, Wall Street's main indexes also moved upward. Given the early weak market open, there were worries that today's broad declines would snap a three-day rally, but the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones indexes are on track for their best week since November 2020.
