A late boost in the day helped lift Canada’s main stock index slightly higher in Thursday trading thanks to gains in the base metals sector. Strength in health care and consumer stocks also overrode weakness in technology and energy shares.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 70.23 points to at 28,110.39, the Hang Seng was down 208.13 points to 21,945.95, the FTSE was up 20.83 points to 7,481.46, and the DAX was up 19.71 points to 14,303.36.
