Canada’s main stock index hit a record high on Thursday but closed in the red soon after. Strength in the telecommunications and utility sectors and a rally in gold prices that lifted precious metal miners were offset by declines across the rest of the sectors.

With the main indexes set for their worst quarter since the pandemic crash in 2020, US stock index futures fell flat as investors focused on the raging conflict in Ukraine and the outlook for interest rate hikes. Any optimism around the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia faded as forces prepared for fresh Russian attacks in the southeast region.

In world markets, the Nikkei was down 205.82 points to at 27,821.43, the Hang Seng was down 235.18 points to 21,996.85, the FTSE was down 63.07 points to 7,515.68, and the DAX was down 191.30 points to 14,414.75.
