Gains in mining, energy, and technology shares countered commodity-linked weakness as Canada’s main stock index moved higher on Friday. The health care sector also moved lower, while the utilities and telecom sectors climbed higher as well.

As jobs grew lesser than expected in March, the unemployment rate fell to a new two-year low. After the Labor Department’s employment report showed nonfarm payrolls increased by 431,000 jobs last month, futures pared gains, economists had forecast payrolls increasing 490,000. The jobless rate dropped to 3.6%, the lowest since February 2020, while average hourly earnings increased 0.4% after edging up 0.1% in February.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.03 cents US compared to 80.09 cents US on Thursday.
Crude oil prices were down 1.25 to $99.03.
The price of gold was down 13.68 to $1,923.38.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 155.45 points to at 27,665.98, the Hang Seng was up 42.70 points to 22,039.55, the FTSE was up 22.22 points to 7,537.90, and the DAX was up 31.73 points to 14,446.48.
