Canada’s main stock index sunk on Tuesday in a large decline. The Toronto Stock Exchange saw early success as energy stocks tracked oil prices and data showed Canada’s exports scaled all-time peak in February. The TSX had risen as much as 0.6% to an intra-day record high of 22,213.07. The loonie was trading 0.5% higher, touching its strongest level since Nov 2021. Only the telecom and utilities sectors moved higher.
Wall Street’s main indexes were also down, on the verge of fresh sanctions on Russia that kept investors on edge. The European Commission is to propose to EU nations sweeping new sanctions, including a ban on imports of coal, rubber, chemicals, and other products from Russia worth up to $9 billion a year. Megacap growth stocks also gave up ground after strong gains a day earlier.

The Canadian dollar traded for 80.52 cents US compared to 80.15 cents US on Monday.
Crude oil prices were down 3.04 to $100.20.
The price of gold was down 11.16 to $1,920.30.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 51.51points to at 27,787.98, the Hang Seng remained at 22,502.31, the FTSE was up 54.80 points to 7,613.72, and the DAX was down 93.80 points to 14,424.36.
