Canada’s main stock index took a dive on Tuesday coming off a boost from surging gold and crude prices, with investor focus now on the Bank of Canada policy meeting later this week. Mining and energy still moved higher.
The NASDAQ went from leading Wall Street's main indexes higher to leading losses, after data showed consumer prices rose largely in line with estimates. US inflation has risen 8.5% over the year to the end of March, to hit its highest rate since 1981. The war in Ukraine drove up energy costs for Americans, and food and housing costs also skyrocketed. It is hoped that this latest surge in prices will put pressure on the US Federal Reserve to hike interest rates, while some hope that this could be the peak for inflation.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.34 cents US compared to 79.40 cents US on Monday.
Crude oil prices were up 6.13 to $100.30.
The price of gold was up 92.30 to $ 1,977.50.
In world markets, the Nikkei was down 486.54 points to 26,334.98, the Hang Seng was up 110.83 points to 21,319.13, the FTSE was down 41.65 points to 7,576.66, and the DAX was down 67.83 points to 14,124.95.
