Canada’s main stock index gained some ground on Wednesday, thanks to stronger gold and crude prices, as investors braced for a rare 50 basis point rate hike by the Bank of Canada. Mining and energy moved higher again while financials and utilities closed lower.
It was another turnaround performance on Wall Street, with all eyes on key United States inflation data. Oil kept steady, with Brent crude jumping just over $100 a barrel. The commodity won back some gains after prices sunk sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.03 cents US compared to 79.34 cents US on Tuesday.
Crude oil prices were up 3.57 to $104.20.
The price of gold was up 12.69 to $1,978.71.
In world markets, the Nikkei was up 508.51 points to 26,843.49, the Hang Seng was up 55.24 points to 21,374.37, the FTSE was up 4.14 points to 7,580.80 and the DAX was down 48.51 points to 14,076.44.
